Erica Min Han
Painting on silk
Erica Min Han is a Chinese-born, London-based artist who graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design, UAL, with an MA degree. Nature serves as her primary inspiration, captivating her with its complexity, beauty, and the profound relationship humans share with it. Additionally, she deeply immerses herself in ancient Chinese painting techniques, which, along with nature, form the foundational elements of her artwork.
Her work is rooted in the traditional Chinese watercolor technique, which reached its zenith during the Song dynasty in the 10th century. However, living in the 21st century, Erica focuses on her immediate surroundings, painting scenes of tulips, daffodils, and other beautiful flowers found in gardens or in the wild.
Using nature as her model, she thoughtfully plays with composition to create scenes that are more beautiful, personal, and imaginative. She begins with live drawings from nature, which are then transferred onto silk using ink. Erica meticulously applies colors layer by layer, enhancing the depth and vibrancy of her work.
Most of her paintings are created on silk, a medium she favors for its transparency, which brings a unique life to her work. When a breeze passes by, it gives the impression that the leaves in her paintings might move, further blurring the line between art and nature.
